Whatever material riches you have in this life, it’s quite certain that you can’t take them with you, yet so many people have died in the attempt to get rich quick.
South Africa became rich because of the discovery of diamonds, and the biggest man-made hole in the world is at Kimberley, where thousands of men staked their claims and dug for diamonds. I don’t know how many died digging, but I do know that in the Californian Gold Rush when 50,000 came at once, and another 30,000 before the year was out, over 4,000 died in the desert before they even got there.
What Jesus offers is heavenly treasure, real riches, true wealth, treasure quite unlike this world’s. He said, “A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” – his earthly possessions, that is. (Luke 12:15)
He said, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)
We cannot serve God and Money/Mammon. You have to choose. Matthew 6:24 Money is a good servant, but a bad master. Here in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says, “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” “He builds too low, who builds beneath the skies.”
Treasures in Heaven What is the most precious treasure we can have?
Riches in Christ
Paul tells the Colossian church that he was struggling for them and those in Laodicea and for all who had not personally met him, his purpose being “that they may be encouraged in heart, united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the riches of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:1-3)
To the Corinthian church Paul wrote, “I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in Him you have been enriched in every way -.” (1 Cor 1:4, 5)
There is a Bach Chorale sung with these words:
Jesus, priceless treasure,
Source of purest pleasure,
Truest friend to me.
How my heart has panted
Till it well-nigh fainted
Thirsting, Lord, for Thee.
